FL Voters to Decide on Continuation of Parkland Shooting School Safety Levy

FL Voters to Decide on Continuation of Parkland Shooting School Safety Levy

A Florida tax levy put in place after the 2018. Parkland school shooting will be on the ballot for renewal this November.

Following the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the 75% millage tax officially went into effect in Lake County in 2019. According to Click Orlando, the Lake County School Board voted for the mill to appear on this year's ballot during their March 2022 meeting.

The outlet shared that no changes would be made to the levy if it is renewed, so property owners would continue to pay 75 cents for every $1,000 of taxable home value. On a $250,000 home, for example, the additional taxes would amount to $187.50.

Lake County Schools told Click Orlando that "funds from the millage tax have gone toward services like student mental health support, school safety officers and nursing staff in the district."

A “YES” vote on November 8 means you approve the continuation of the millage to support school safety efforts.

A “NO” vote on the 75% mill rate means you would like to discontinue the millage tax.

For those unfamiliar with the Parkland shooting, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz opened fire on students and staff on February 14, 2018 at approximately 2:21 p.m local time. During a six-minute spree, the teenager killed 17 people and injured 17 others.

The Parkland shooting is the deadliest in American history, surpassing the infamous massacre at Colorado's Columbine High School, which resulted in 15 deaths in April 1999.

What do you think about keeping this school safety tax levy?
