Georgia Gov. Extends Gas Tax Suspension

Georgia Gov. Extends Gas Tax Suspension

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp (R) has officially extended the state's gas tax suspension into mid-December.

Jacksonville, FL news station News 4 Jax confirmed the extension, noting:

Kemp signed the orders that extended the temporary suspension of the state motor fuel tax and extended the supply chain state of emergency.

Kemp previously signed a law in March that passed with broad bipartisan support, suspending the state’s gas tax through May 31. Kemp signed additional extensions in May, July, August, September and October.

Per Georgia state law, Kemp can continue suspending gas taxes indefinitely, provided that state lawmakers ratify his actions during their next session.

When the gas tax is in effect, Peach State residents pay a federal tax of 18.4 cents per gallon and a state tax of 29.1 cents per gallon. Certain counties also charge their own fuel taxes.

Diesel taxes are slightly higher, with the federal rate set at 24.4 cents per gallon, and Georgia’s tax clocking in at 32.6 cents a gallon.

In a press release about the ongoing gas tax holiday, Kemp called out the President Biden administration, saying:

“As another holiday season and a looming diesel shortage approaches, Georgians are still facing record high inflation, growing costs at the grocery store just before Thanksgiving, and high prices at the pump as they prepare to travel to see family, all due to a complete failure of leadership in Washington."

Incumbent Kemp is currently running against Stacey Abrams, and the duo has been engaged in a heated back-and-forth regarding tax cuts and job creation throughout Georgia.

Kemp also made headlines in August when he was called to testify in the 2020 Trump election fraud probe investigation.

What do you think about Governor Kemp continually extending Georgia's gas tax suspension?
