Florida Gas Tax Holiday Ends, Fuel Prices Expected to Spike

As Florida's gas tax holiday ends, some economists are worried that Floridians could see a spike in fuel prices.

Orlando news network WESH 2 reported that the holiday removed a $.25 tax through the month of October, and that the tax is expected be reinstated at midnight on Tuesday, November 1.

Governor Ron DeSantis (R) has not indicated that the gas tax reprieve will be extended.

The current average gas price in Florida is $3.29, with many Central Florida counties averaging even lower fuel costs. WESH shared the following data:

  • $3.20 in Sumter County.
  • $3.22 in Lake, Osceola and Brevard counties.
  • $3.23 in Orange County.
  • $3.24 in Volusia County.
  • $3.25 in Seminole County.

WFTV 9 also weighed in, noting that AAA anticipates prices at the pump will be significantly higher tomorrow.

“While Halloween is traditionally a time for filling bags with candy, drivers may also want to fill their gas tank to take advantage of current prices at the pump,” said Mark Jenkins, a spokesman for AAA - The Auto Club Group.

He continued, “Pump prices will likely rise 25 cents overnight, when the state gas tax expires on Tuesday morning.”

Earlier in October, WFTV shared that Floridians did not see the savings they were expected too, and that gas companies benefited from the savings more than the general public.

What do you think about Florida's gas prices potentially spiking tomorrow?
