Divisive DeSantis Promises Largest Tax Cuts In Florida History

Divisive Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has promised residents of the Sunshine State the largest tax cuts in state history if he is re-elected in November.

DeSantis -- who has close ties to Donald Trump's newly-hired attorney Chris Kimes -- faces opponent Charlie Crist, a former Republic now running on the Democratic ticket, in the Florida Gubernatorial race.

Per Politico, Crist has stepped down from his Congressional seat as his campaign against DeSantis heats up. DeSantis, for his part, is promising the aforementioned tax cuts in a bid to entice voters come November.

Business Insider reported on the sitting Governor's recent comments:

"We are going to roll out our tax package for next year, probably in the next couple of weeks, and that is going to be by far the biggest tax cuts in the history of the state of Florida, so stay tuned for that," DeSantis said at a press event in Live Oak, Florida, focused on infrastructure.

DeSantis didn't yet provide details about which tax cuts were ahead. Florida is one of nine states that doesn't have a state income tax, and it has a 6% sales tax, with some exceptions.

It is worth noting that DeSantis likely has political motives to roll out his budget proposal well ahead of the Florida Legislature's next session in Tallahassee, which doesn't begin until March 2023.

With his potential re-election looming in November, the Governor undoubtedly wants to put his proposed tax cuts in front of Florida residents sooner rather than later.

DeSantis, despite the national opposition he faced for his lax policies during the COVID-19 pandemic, is expected to be a favorite for the Republican Presidential ticket in 2024 if Trump does not run again.

Trump, for his part, is facing myriad legal issues relating to an IRS probe and the FBI's August 8 raid of his Mar-a-Lago residence
