Donald Trump Officially Appeals IRS Tax Record Ruling

Donald Trump Officially Appeals IRS Tax Record Ruling

Former President Donald Trump has officially appealed a recent ruling that he must hand over his personal tax records to the IRS.

Earlier this month, the Washington DC Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously ruled that the United States House of Representatives can obtain Trump's tax records from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

At the time, CNN reported:

A federal appeals court on Tuesday [August 9] signed off on a House Ways and Means Committee request to obtain former President Donald Trump's tax returns from the Internal Revenue Service.

The 3-0 ruling from the DC Circuit Court of Appeals is a blow to Trump, who has argued for years in court against releasing his tax returns to any investigators. A trial-level judge he appointed while president previously rejected his arguments in the case.

Now, per a new CNN report, Trump and his legal team have filed an official appeal:

The DC Circuit panel made "made several errors" in its ruling in favor of the House, Trump said in the new filing Thursday.

"The decision here will control future disputes between Congress and the Executive— including those of sitting Presidents -- almost all of which arise in this circuit," Trump said. "The Court should grant the petition."

The news is unsurprising, as the New York Times previously noted that Trump planned to battle the ruling:

Mr. Trump’s legal team has vowed to fight the congressional effort “tooth and nail,” and he is virtually certain to appeal to the Supreme Court. If at least four justices on the court vote to take any such appeal, that would effectively shield Mr. Trump from a final judgment until next year.

Trump's new petition also requested that if the DC Circuit opts out of rehearing the case, the ruling be put on hold in order for him to seek intervention from the Supreme Court.

All of this comes on the heels of the Federal Bureau of Investigations' raid of Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.

The Washington Post reported that the FBI executed its search warrant after "federal authorities grew increasingly concerned that Trump or his lawyers and aides had not, in fact, returned all the documents and other material that were government property, according to people familiar with the discussions."

Trump -- a divisive figure even before the now-infamous January 6, 2021 attack on the United States Capitol -- has unsurprisingly weighed in, indicating that he hopes the Bureau didn't "plant evidence" during their search.

Furthermore, former Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg yesterday pled guilty to multiple tax crimes in New York City. As part of his plea deal, the 75-year-old is expected to serve a five-month sentence at the infamous Rikers Island complex.

What do you think about Trump's appeal?
