Former Atlanta Official Convicted In Bribery Case, Facing Jail Time
Jo Ann Macrina, currently of Daytona Beach Shores, Florida, previously worked for the City of Atlanta, Georgia from 2011 through 2016. During that time, Macrina steered city business worth hundreds of millions of dollars to a specific contracting company, who paid her off with bribes.
According to an official release from the IRS, Macrina accepted "cash, luxury items [including $10,000 in jewelry], and the promise of a future job" from the contractor, PRAD Group. She specifically provided the firm's owner, Lohrasb "Jeff" Jafari with "access to confidential information and preferential treatment with respect to City of Atlanta projects."
In addition to the physical goods Macrina was given, she received $30,000 in four separate payments between June and September 2016.
Keri Farley, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Atlanta, spoke out regarding the verdict in Macrina's case:
"Circumventing the process to hire contractors for the city by accepting bribes to profit personally is the highest form of public corruption. As this verdict shows, the people of the City of Atlanta and the FBI will not tolerate anyone who takes advantage of city funds and abuses their position of trust."
Macrina was convicted of conspiracy and federal program bribery. Her sentencing date has not been confirmed but she does face potential prison time.
