Daycare Owner Faces 15 Years In Prison For Tax Evasion

A daycare owner in Wilmington, Delaware is facing 15 years in federal prison for three counts of tax evasion.

According to an official release from the IRS Criminal Investigation division, Brenda Mathis, who owned LJ's Playpen Academy, a daycare center, failed to declare all of her income on corporate tax returns in 2015, 2016, and 2017.

Mathis, who pled guilty last week, faces a maximum prison sentence of 5 years per count -- 15 years total -- on three counts of tax evasion. She will be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Richard G. Andrews on December 16, 2022.

The IRS shared thoughts on the case from David C. Weiss, U.S. Attorney for the District of Delaware. He said:

"Brenda Mathis' scheme to evade taxes for the purpose of lining her own pockets was a theft from the American public. Together with our law enforcement partners, we will continue to protect the interests of law-abiding taxpayers by pursuing those who evade taxes for their own enrichment."

IRS Criminal Investigation Special Agent in Charge Yury Kruty also weighed in, expressing:

"This guilty plea is a win for all those who play by the rules. Mathis defrauded our nation's tax system, a criminal act that will not be tolerated. Let her admission of guilt serve as a stern warning to anyone thinking about engaging in similar criminal behavior."

This case occurs as the IRS prepares for a major revamp -- thanks to an additional $80 billion in funding -- that will see the agency focus on targeting white collar tax evaders, like late billionaire Robert Brockman who passed away before his trial could begin.
