Contributions to a Roth must be made by the unextended due date of the taxpayer’s return – essentially by the April due date of the tax return. However, due to the COVID-19 emergency, the deadline for making contributions for 2019 was extended to July 15, 2020; the 2020 contribution deadline was extended to May 17, 2021 (Notice 2021-21).
