Archer Medical Savings Accounts (MSAs)

An Archer medical savings account (MSA) is a trust or custodial account established for the exclusive purpose of paying for qualified medical expenses of the account beneficiary, his or her spouse, or dependents (IRC Sec. 220). Archer MSAs operates almost the same as health savings accounts (HSAs) except that new Archer MSAs may not be established after 2007. An individual can still utilize an Archer MSA if he or she was an active participant in the MSA before 2008, or he or she became an active participant for a tax year ending after 2007 by reason of coverage under a high deductible health plan (HDHP) of an Archer MSA participating employer. Information related to Archer MSAs can be found in Pub 969.
