Prepaid Expenses and Tax Deductions

Generally, prepaid expenses are not deductible for self-employed individuals. This rule applies to any expense paid far enough in advance to, in effect, create an asset with a useful life extending substantially beyond the end of the current tax year.

Example – Prepaid Expense -The taxpayer signs a 3-year insurance contract. Even though he paid the premiums for 2020, 2021 and 2022 when he signed the contract, he can only deduct the premium for 2021 on his 2021 tax return. He can deduct in 2020 and 2022 the premium allocable to those years.
