Debbie Fink prepared the taxes for my parents-in-law for a number of years. As they aged and needed help with their financial affairs, my wife and I for the first time became involved in overseeing their financial matters. During this time, we noted that Debbie had made a significant mistake on their 2014 return, significantly underreporting their income. We immediately brought this to Debbies intention, and the IRS also noted it a short time later. This underreporting resulted in penalty and interest of over 1200. When we called Debbie about this, she assured us she would pay the penalty. But then she refused to do so, even sending my in-laws a letter saying they had not provided her the necessary information. That was simply untrue, as shown by Debbies own records. She had included the items in question, but omitted a digit from the amount reported on one 1099 and took the other number from the wrong 1099 she reported the number from one 1099 twice, and another not at all. We explained this to her, providing copies of the documents, but she wholly failed to respond to our last communication. Debbies mistake, and more importantly her failure to take responsibility for it, cost my in-laws more than 1200.
