Absolutely do not recommend Kathy’s Tax Service – especially if you’re dealing with anything beyond a basic W-2. In 2022, my partner and I hired Jim from Kathy’s Tax Service during a major financial transition: we had just combined households, sold two properties, and bought a new home. It was a complex situation, which is exactly why we hired a professional – and paid a hefty fee – to make sure everything was handled properly. Fast forward to 2024: we get a letter from the IRS requesting additional documentation and clarification regarding the real estate transactions in our return. Naturally, I reached out to Jim, assuming he’d help resolve the issue since he prepared the return in the first place. Not only was he dismissive and unhelpful, but he also charged me an additional $60 to generate three documents – which, by the way, he didn’t even submit. I had to send them to the IRS myself. When I questioned the process and lack of support, I was met with zero accountability. Jim essentially blamed us for not providing the “right” documentation in 2022 – as if it’s the client’s job to know what an experienced tax professional needs. The attitude was clear: this was our problem, not his. Communication with him is a nightmare. He’s short, unhelpful, and acts like any follow-up or clarification is a burden. You have to chase him down, do all the legwork, and then pay more just to get a few PDFs. If you want a tax preparer who stands behind their work, communicates like a professional, and actually provides support when issues arise – look elsewhere. This experience was frustrating, expensive, and left me with more stress than if I had done the taxes myself.
