We used to live in southern Colorado and so have stayed with H&R Block in Pueblo after moving away. This year was our first time working with Ms. Garcia, and it was terrible. She made no effort to learn what was required to prepare our Washington DC tax return. Tax day came and she still had no idea what she was doing. She presented me with a return that was incomplete or outright wrong in many places. She calculated that I owed a $250 minimum tax that in fact clearly did not apply. Luckily I figured out that I owed DC $600 (plus the $30 penalty I'm paying DC because I am filing late due to Terri's dereliction and shoddy work)..... Most serious, when I explained to Terri that her calculation was entirely wrong and would result in understating my DC tax liability, she advised me to just file the false return anyway. Her comment was, "It was done the same way last year and you didn't get audited LAST year, did you?" This person is neither competent nor trustworthy. I am considering contacting whoever licenses tax preparers federally or at the state level. These were not honest mistakes; this was gross negligence followed by affirmatively advising me to file a false tax return because she was too lazy to research and find out the right way to prepare a DC return. Legally and ethically unacceptable.... By e-mail, Terri has told me that H&R Block is sending a check to refund the fee that I paid them for Terri to prepare our DC return. I still have to get H&R or Terri to pay the $30 penalty that resulted from her doing nothing before tax day to get the return ready and then presenting a proposed return that was replete with omissions and major errors. SAVE YOURSELF A HASSLE AND EXTRA EXPENSE AND FIND ANOTHER TAX PREPARER.
