Not only is everything Greg said absolutely accurate, but it is also much worse. I have since resigned from the business and in the process of filing my own complaint with the Texas Board of Public Accountants.

Avoid this tax preparer at all costs. My experience with Michael Powell, CPA, was a disaster from start to finish — one of the most bizarre I’ve ever had. I filed my 2024 taxes with him. After completing all forms, I signed my return on March 22, paid him, and he confirmed everything was correct and that he would file ASAP. Despite that, I received tax non-payment notices from both the IRS and the Arizona Department of Revenue. In 43 years of filing taxes, I had never been late. When I contacted him, he was dismissive, then admitted he did not file my returns until the end of June — months late. He showed no concern. I followed up with a formal demand letter to document his admission. He later claimed he wrote letters to the IRS and Arizona authorities admitting fault and would cover penalties. This never happened. Deadlines passed while he did nothing. I was forced to spend hours with both agencies and ultimately paid the penalties myself. I sent him proof and a second demand letter seeking reimbursement — including the filing fee he charged me for a return filed late. At one point, he even claimed he filed an extension — which I confirmed was false, and which he had no legal right to do without my consent. This conduct is unacceptable for any CPA. Under IRS Circular 230 (31 C.F.R. Part 10), tax professionals must exercise competence and due diligence. Failing to file on time and misrepresenting an extension are clear violations. Arizona Revised Statutes §32-741 and §32-746 also require integrity, objectivity, and due professional care — standards he ignored. I did everything required: signed in March, paid him, and trusted him to file. His negligence, dishonesty, and lack of accountability caused financial loss, wasted time, and needless stress. I have reported this matter to the appropriate authorities and requested that his license be revoked. My advice: stay far away from this CPA.
