My wife and I have been in the real estate business for the past 17 years. Two years ago, we engaged Smallwood and Associates to handle our accounting affairs for business and personal. Little did we know what a costly disaster this would be for us.
There was a complete breakdown in communication, organization, and lack of accountability by the accountant.
Smallwood and Associates were given the tools to file our taxes accordingly and on time and were unable to do so. Our software system needs a complete overhaul and it has been a nightmare to correct everything from what they inputted incorrectly.
In the end, it has costs us thousands of dollars in late fees and tens of thousands in taxes.
When we terminated Smallwood, we were welcomed with emails blaming myself, my wife, and my staff for everything they lacked. As a businessman, when providing a service you do what is in the best interest of the client. Clearly Cal Smallwood never understood the concept of 'the customer comes first'. It is human to make mistakes, but being accountable is part of good business.
Fortunately, we have engaged someone to correct and amend our returns; however, it won't save us all the time, efforts and money that his firm has costs us.
I would recommend that you NOT use this company. There are plenty of accounting companies that will treat you better.
