IRS Tax Problems

How to respond to a second IRS CP2000 notice.

How to respond to a second IRS CP2000 notice.

The IRS is not known for how quickly they resolve problems and because of budget issues is understaffed. IRS CP-2000 notices are computer generated. The second and subsequent notices are pre-programmed to automatically go out at predetermined intervals. Thus, it is not uncommon for a second notice to be issued even though you have already responded to the original notice. If you kept copies of the original response and a proof of mailing you can probably just ignore the second notice. However, there is always the chance the first one got lost in the mail, especially during the holiday season. Professional tax preparers don't leave it to chance and will frequently resend the original response with a cover letter explaining it is a duplicate of an earlier response.
