CVS Combats 'Pink Tax,' Drops Prices In 12 States

Popular retailer CVS is combatting the 'pink tax' on feminine hygiene products by lowering prices in 12 states.

This is a gender inequality term that specifically refers to a markup on goods and services marketed to women, when men pay less for similar products and services. Razors, shampoo, conditioner, and other personal hygiene products are often subject to the 'pink tax.'

Furthermore, many believe that menstrual products should be taxed at all since they are a necessity for women. CVS is now leading the charge for this change.

The brand officially announced the change on its website, noting that prices on CVS-branded menstrual products will be lowered by 25%.

CVS shared, "Women deserve quality when it comes to the products they may need each month. We’ve reduced the price on CVS Health brand period products by 25%* in core CVS Pharmacy locations."

The brand went on to express that they are attempting to eliminate the 'pink tax' around the country, "We’re paying the tax on period products on behalf of our customers where and when possible, and are working to help eliminate the tax nationwide."

The 12 states where CVS will begin paying the 'pink tax' for its shoppers are Arkansas, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin, and West Virginia.

The Alliance For Period Supplies -- an organization that collects and distributes pads, tampons, and other feminine hygiene products in communities nationwide -- has published data that says 22 states currently tax period supplies at a rate between 4% and 7%.

What do you think about CVS eliminating the 'pink tax' on their store-branded period products?
