100,000 taxpayers personal information breached from IRS website
Breaking News: According to the IRS, identity thieves have gained access to the IRS website and accessed tax return and personal information for more than 100,000 taxpayers.
The perpetrators used a security flaw in the “Get Transcript” system, which included knowing some personal information about the taxpayer, like Social Security number, date of birth, tax filing status and street address.
"The IRS notes this issue does not involve its main computer system that handles tax filing submission; that system remains secure," the agency said in a press release.
The IRS added it is notifying taxpayers whose information was accessed through the breach.
