BATON ROUGE – A Louisiana tax preparer faces felony charges for a fraud scheme that cost taxpayers an estimated $300,000.
Melissa Cato, of Gibsland, allegedly altered clients’ state income tax returns to claim fabricated losses for businesses that did not exist.
Tax auditors with the Louisiana Department of Revenue noticed a suspicious pattern with hundreds of returns Cato filed in the tax years 2012 through 2015. Investigators determined that many of the clients had never owned or operated businesses, and had not claimed any business losses when they provided Cato with their tax records.
Cato was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Wednesday, February 22 on charges of Principal to Filing or Maintaining False Public Records and Principal to Illegal Transmission of Monetary Funds. She is the 66th person arrested under a joint anti-tax fraud initiative of the Department of Revenue and the state Attorney General’s office.

This lady has been doing my taxes 5yrs! She knows her stuff! She got me out of debt! She loves helping her customers! Ppl are not perfect, but she's perfect enuf to do taxes! People get very angry when it comes to income tax, try to make a bad name for this lady, after she helps them! Not cool! But she keeps pushing! She now has anutha office open! She's a beast!!! Ignore any bad reviews, they must got mad over some petty!

She's so unorganized with her business, she's loud and you never get the papers back with how much you paying her. She charged me 600.00 twice like I wouldn't notice. Please avoid use this preparer if necessary shes only help people she knows and talk about you bad behind your back.

Please don't use this tax preparer. She has sent my tax refund to someone else account. I have been waiting weeks on my refund. I paid this person $649 including her bank fees for electronic deposit. My refund has been released from the IRS since March 9th.. This appears to be some kind of mistake on tax preparer behalf. My refund has been spent by someone else.
